How Much Water Does an AI Prompt Use?
“Every AI prompt uses a bottle of water.”
Short answer
False. Measured water use varies by more than 10,000-fold from one data center to the next, so no single “bottle per prompt” number is real. The same prompt can use almost no water in a cool climate with efficient cooling and far more somewhere hot. Server efficiency, utilization, cooling design, climate and the local power source all change the result.

What the sources show
- 1
LBNL identifies several technical and geographic factors, so one universal estimate does not fit every prompt.
- 2
GAO says company reporting does not separate generative AI’s energy and water use from other data-center workloads.
- 3
Water used directly for cooling must be separated from water used to generate electricity.
Attribution boundary
The facility, model, time and local grid conditions for the specific workload in question.
